Sunday Brunch – A Family Tradition

Our adult daughter called Sunday morning, “What are you having for lunch?” she asked. The same thing we always have of course. I think I may have been cooking the exact same Sunday morning brunch after church for the past 15 years. I guess that makes it a family tradition. “Do you mind if we join you?” she asked, referring to herself and her new husband.

Children who have suffered trauma seem to appreciate routine and consistency. Even when they grow up, they like to think that everything is the same as it always was at home.

Of course, we didn’t mind if they joined us. Their two daughters, our grandchildren ages six months and two, had spent the night with us, so they needed to pick them up anyway. What are four more people when you are cooking for 10 anyway, right?

Well I used two dozen eggs to make French toast and scrambled eggs.
I used an entire loaf of bread to make the French toast.

(This does vary; sometimes I make waffles or pancakes.)
We used a whole gallon of milk between making the French toast and drinking it with brunch.
I cooked three pounds of bacon.
(A few years ago, I discovered the precooked bacon in three-pound packages at Sam’s Club. It is delicious, and I only have to stack it with paper towels in between and place it in the microwave for two minutes.)
Two and a half pounds of Schwann’s shredded hash browns cooked in a whole stick of real butter.
One fresh cantaloupe that we divided so each person got a slice.

An entire brunch prepared for 14 people for about $22.00. If we had gone out to eat, I think it would have been four times that amount. We all sat around the kitchen table together chatting like old times. The children argued about who got to sit by big sister, a real treat now that she doesn’t live at home.
