Remember His Dream

My Language Arts teacher gave our class a writing assignment on how we are keeping the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. alive in our own personal life. As we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. King this day I thought I would share with each of you how I am keeping his dream alive. Enjoy!

A DREAM
A dream. Who knew something so small could have such a huge impact on the way we live our lives today, but one man’s voice cannot do it alone. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream of living in a world without being mocked about the color of his skin or others skin colors. I believe that Dr. King’s dream lives on today by the impact that I have had on my community, other states and other parts of the world.

In my community I work at the hospital as a volunteer. One special day I was called to the maternity floor to help with a discharge. I opened the door and an African-American family stood inside with a new baby boy. Joy filled me as I wheeled out mother and baby with dad by their side to go home. If it were not for Dr. King’s dream, I would not have been able to experience the joy that sweeps you over when you see a new life join this earth. Dr. King said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Because of his dream that little boy can hold his head high.

Dr. King wanted to see children of different color join hands. I am part of making that happen. This summer I traveled on a mission trip to the second poorest area in America to help this community and teach the children about the love of God. Children of different races came to hear us as we helped teach them songs and Bible lessons. I proudly held their hands as we prayed together. We didn’t judge them on their skin color or by their socio-economic status but as Dr. King has stated, “…by the content of their character.”

I believe that I am part of helping his dream come true by touching lives of children on the other side of the world. After praying for many years for a sibling my prayers were answered and my family adopted my little sister, Gracie, from China. She is an amazing gift. While we were in China I was able to visit her orphanage and comfort a little boy crying in his crib. Because of Dr. King’s dream I was able to give him the love he deserves and my sister can live in a country free from persecution. Dr. King says that, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” Because of his powerful dream, I am changed because I can touch the lives of people of different races and I can allow them to touch my life. We can help his dream together. Continue to follow the dream of this man and live in a world where we are free at last!
