I called the school principal yesterday about speaking to the other two classes. And today, after losing the pigtail hair style and straightening my hair to give me a tad more credibility, I showed up unannounced at district office to find out what hoops I must jump through to get my handout disseminated. Unfortunately, I was not able to speak with anyone today, so I left my business card and will follow up tomorrow. I hadn’t heard from the principal during a 24 hour period, so I called again. She returned my call and left a message saying she hadn’t had a chance to check with the other two teachers about their schedules. Funny thing, she scheduled my first talk while in her office without checking with my daughter’s teacher at all.
To insure the accuracy and appropriateness of my handout, I have been in contact with Adam Pertman of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute. He made a few minor suggestions to change my handout, and then sent me a wonderful publication about the Adoption Institute, their efforts to improve the public’s perception about and awareness of adoption issues, and their attempt to “educate the educators.” That information will be a large part of what I present to the district office as soon as possible.
I am thinking I would like to start a broader campaign to “encourage” this district to undertake sensitivity training about adoption issues… across the board. Not just in my daughter’s classroom, or the other two fourth grade classes, or even her entire school. Why not shoot higher and start pushing the district to open their minds?
Before signing off on this post, I have a question… what would you folks like to hear/talk about on this blog? I have lots of access to statistics, general adoption information, and more “clinical” stuff like that… some of which is pertinent to some people some of the time, and some of which seems pretty boring to me. I could tell stories/anecdotes/ideas pretty endlessly… but that might be boring too. What do you like to hear? What would you like me to blog about??? Please let me know!
