Our oldest adopted daughter is getting married in a couple of weeks. She has always been a sentimental person and has always coveted her family’s fellowship. The first few years she lived with us she really only coveted her birth family’s time, but now that she is older, her adopted family’s time as well. It isn’t surprising that she asked both of her birth sisters to be in her wedding, as well as her sister-in-law to be. We were a little surprised when she asked her 17-year-old brother to stand up at the wedding with the groom. Then she asked two of the younger boys, 14, and 12, to be ushers and she asked two of the younger girls to hand out programs.

The wedding is to be a unique blend of her birth and adopted families, similar to last week’s birthday party for the couple’s two-year-old daughter (aka our granddaughter). In her birth family, our oldest child was the middle child. However, her role changed when she and her younger birth sister became part of our family because their older sister wasn’t available to us.

Our oldest daughter came to live with us when she was 13 and left shortly after she graduated and turned 18. Therefore, she hasn’t lived in our home with some of our current children as a big sister. She frequently comes to visit and makes an effort to bond with each child. She also schedules lunches with her birth sisters, ask for their opinions, and help in most of her plans.

Super Dad, her adoptive father will be giving her away at the wedding. However, her birth grandparents, aunts and uncles, as well as her adoptive family members will all be there to support her.
