There are times I get phone calls to baby-sit for my neighbor’s girls and for my aunt’s children. I also look after some of the little ones from my church on occasion but I do baby-sit Gracie quite a bit and I always need to know what to do in case of an emergency and I have to call 9-1-1. If you care for your younger brother or sister you too need to be prepared to know what to say if you have to call for help. Below is a general list of instructions in the event you need help in an emergency.
First off you must always remain calm when dialing 9-1-1. Tell the dispatcher your name and that you are alone and are babysitting your little brother or sister. Next you need to tell the dispatcher what the emergency is. For example, if your sibling is hurt you need to tell the dispatcher a brief description of what happened such as my little sister tripped as she was skating and I think she has broken her arm. Follow any instructions the dispatcher may give you.

Have your home address memorized and give it to the dispatcher. It would also be wise to remember the nearest cross street and give that information to the dispatcher as well.
Tell the dispatcher your phone number and remember to never hang up until the dispatcher tells you to hang up. You may be given instructions to follow until help arrives.
In the event of an emergency it is very important that you call 9-1-1 for help before you call your parents. Every second counts and you should call for help before calling your parents. Do not be afraid to call for help even when you are not sure if you need it. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
