Today is Ty’s birthday and he is quite proud to be eight years old. He has been counting down the days for the past two months. Mom, “Now how many more days do I have until my birthday?” Each day he thought of a new gift that he absolutely could not live without. He even convinced his brothers and sisters that they should give him gifts, as well. Of course, convincing them wasn’t too difficult, because he is everyone’s favorite little brother.
I was a little surprised when two of his older brothers each purchased him a $30 gift. Considering their limited incomes, they are 12 and 14, that amounts to about half of a month’s salary for them. Neither seemed to think it was out of line to spend so much on their little brother, they were just happy to see his excitement over the gifts they had purchased for him.
He wanted me to take him shopping so he could pick out his own birthday presents. Originally, he told me he wanted army stuff from his parents. Silly me, I was seeking army stuff at the store the day I took him.

He ended up choosing a remote control tarantula, quite realistic looking, so he could scare his sisters and a remote control styrofoam airplane that flies 300 feet in the air. Because it is near Halloween, we were able to get an army costume in size 8-10 complete with pants, shirt, helmet, binoculars, and grenades.
We are waiting for Super Dad to come home from work so we can sing “Happy Birthday” and have birthday cake. That is if Ty hasn’t blown us all up with his grenades before then.
We always try to make sure that we spend about the same amount on each child for birthdays and Christmas. Because some of the children were adopted at older ages, I worry that they might think someone is getting preferencial treatment. Do any of you worry about that?
