I found some
letters that were written by Korean birthmothers and as the sister of an adopted sister from China I often think about what Gracie’s birthmother may have wanted to say to her in a letter. This question will always be in my mind but I hope the letter would have been one filled with love, sadness and hopes for a better life then what could have been given to her in China.
I have great appreciation for Gracie’s birthmother for bringing my sister into my life. I also am very thankful she chose to see that Gracie would be found quickly and safely, as Gracie was place in front of the gates of the orphanage. I am thankful she chose to give Gracie life. I am also thankful that Gracie was warmly wrapped in a Chinese Army jacket and was given a bottle. The nannies at the orphanage estimated that Gracie was approximately 3 weeks old when she was found. This lady cared and feed Gracie for the first few weeks of her life.
I have also wondered why she chose to keep Gracie for that period of time instead of immediately giving her away. Did she try to hide Gracie until she was big enough to cry out loud and fearful Gracie may be found? Did she beg her husband to keep her? Was the decision made to give her away because of the one child policy in China? These are just a few questions my family and I have and I am sure Gracie will also have, as she grows older.
I also think about what Gracie’s birthmother is doing right now and how often she thinks about Gracie. Does Gracie’s birthmother wonder what Gracie is doing during the day? Does she wonder what kind of family we are? Does she wonder if Gracie is healthy? I am sure she has many questions herself.
Even though we have never met this lady that lives half way around the world we are very thankful and grateful for her gift to us. “The Lord has done great things for us, we are glad.” Psalm 126:3.
