Including Your Sisters in Your Wedding

Our oldest daughter, who is also our oldest child by 22 days, has gotten married. She is the first of our eleven children to marry. She was very gracious in including not only her birth sisters in her wedding, but nearly all of her siblings by adoption as well.

She talked about just going to the justice of the peace, but I talked her into having a church wedding. She began attending our church when she came to live in our home as a foster child at the age of 13. The church has remained a part of her life ever since and I am sure that the memories of a church wedding are much better than memories of the justice of the piece.

We had different ideas of what a small wedding is though. I pictured her with her husband, each with one friend to stand up with them, and the immediate family. She pictured four bridesmaids and over one hundred guest. She also gave us about six weeks to plan the entire thing.

The wedding turned out beautifully. Her sisters and other siblings were very supportive throughout the planning process and the wedding. The groom’s mother is part owner of a bridal shop and also an accomplished seamstress. Therefore, she provided all of the dresses, the flowers, and the decorations. We ended up providing the all of the food, the invitations, the programs, the rehearsal dinner, some of the tuxedos, and the photographs. I guess you could say we got off much cheaper than we could have.

The sisters looked beautiful together. A couple of times while they were growing up we had professional photos taken of just the three of them. I hated to separate them off because they had become part of our family. However, we also wanted to acknowledge their relationship before becoming part of our family.
