part 1

One of our members is the leader for Roots and Shoots-- an ecology focused organization--for our group. For their valentines, her family passed out a snack sized ziploc bag with a peat moss pellet, a gourd seed, a Hershey's kiss, and instructions for planting the seed.

I was explaining to Caleb and Ben on the way home how we would wet the pellet, put the seed in it, etc., and they became very excited. As we were chatting, I heard a dismayed sounding "Uh-oh" from the back seat. Micheline seemed upset and when I asked her what was wrong, she said, "I don't have a seed in my bag." I asked her why not, guessing that perhaps she had lost the seed. "I ate it", came the reply.

I guess having that Hershey's kiss in there made the whole kit and kaboodle look edible, and while I doubt it tasted very good, I'm glad she stopped at the seed and didn't sample the peat moss pellet as well.

The kids got valentines in the mail yesterday from their aunt and sister, and their grandma came by with more goodies for them. They were pretty excited about the day and last night when Caleb went to bed he took his much-loved box of valentines and put it on his bed. Having never had ownership of much, he is quite concerned if someone tries to take anything of his, so I guess he wasn't taking any chances. With his body between the box and the wall, he could protect them while he slept.

My kids' valentines usually mysteriously disappear after a week or two, thanks to yours truly. I'm not sure that will be the case with him. He will have to decide when and if he is ready to give some of them up. If it gives him a sense of security, I don't mind if he keeps them until next year.
