I want to share a poem with each of you written by a 10 year old boy named Harrison. Harrison and his family adopted a beautiful little girl named Clara from the Guangdong Province in China on September 4, 2006. His story and my story of desiring a sibling are very similar. Harrison was a second grader and eight at the time when he called a family meeting to announce that he wanted a baby sister and that his family should adopt one. His parents told him that adoption was a big decision and that they would have to pray about it. The following day Harrison called another family meeting to find out what his parents decision was. Harrison’s dad thought this desire was an “only child thing” and thought it would pass. Little did Harrison’s parents know at that time that this was the start of an amazing journey to receive Clara. A couple of months later Harrison’s desire for a sibling never went away and in tears one Sunday he asked his parents “can’t we just go to the adoption agency and look?” His parents explained to him that adoption agencies do not have showrooms, but they would seriously pray about adoption. It was not long after this that they knew they were called to adopt. I hope you enjoy this poem written by this amazing boy.
I Am
by Harrison Pierce
I am an American brother of a Chinese sister
I wonder how the babies in orphanages in China are doing
I hear the babies cry
I see them waiting for their parents
I want to go back to China to help
I am an American brother of a Chinese sister
I pretend to be holding another cute Chinese baby
I feel the babies holding so tight against me
I touch my baby sister and wonder why God matched me up with her
I worry that all the orphans in China won't get a family
I cry when a baby in China has a really bad sickness
I am an American brother of a Chinese sister
I understand the babies are well taken care of
I say God is watching over them
I dream all Chinese orphans will eventually come to America
I try to raise money for the orphanages in China
I hope they all grow up to have great lives
I am an American brother of a Chinese sister.
