Acquiring Older Sibling’s Bad Habits

Do your younger children seem to pick up the behaviors and attitudes of their older brothers and sisters? Do they ever pick up the positive attributes? Maybe I’m just having a difficult week, but it seems to me that my younger children only acquire the negative attributes of their older siblings. They seem to pick up those little behaviors or quirks that annoy you and make you nuts.

One of my adult daughters always chewed her nails so short that they bled and then she would begin chewing on the sides of her fingers. Apparently, Lyn thought that was a really neat thing to do and now she does it all the time, too.

Lyn has a habit of always answering questions in a voice so low that you can’t make out her words. Even though you are looking at her and standing two feet from her face, you can’t hear her. However, if she’s in the other room playing with her siblings, you can hear every word.

Now Dani has decided that must be the best way to answer questions, too. We’ve explained to the girls that it is disrespectful to answer an adult that way. We’ve explained that we don’t like it. Sometimes, their requests are denied as a result, but it has yet to change.

The four year old throws some of the worlds best temper tantrums. Throwing herself onto the floor and screaming. I guess that Ami, having turned one, thinks it looks like too much fun, so she has begun as well.

Lane in typical teenage fashion sometimes likes to roll his eyes at me and answer me in a tone that really annoys me. I always reprimand him and remind him that it is disrespectful. However, it didn’t take long for Buck and Ty to decide that maybe they could get away with that too.

It could just be the end to a frustrating first week of school. Too bad it isn't another long weekend.

Yikes, I hope the Sunday school teacher didn't think he learned it from you or daddy. I always wonder if they think things like that...Julia

Sometimes you walk into an IEP and get some very odd looks. I have often wondered what they are thinking, but decided that not asking was probably the wiser course. John
